For her, it started with a headache.
When the pain persisted for more than a week, a doctor appointment was scheduled. That appointment led to another appointment who suspected optic neuritis. One MRI later, the suspicion was confirmed, and a referral was made to a neurologist. A few days later, Nicholle found herself in the hospital, tethered to a steroid drip to reduce the inflammation of the optic nerve of her left eye. Since optic neuritis can serve as a precursor to multiple sclerosis, a spinal tap was also ordered. By year's end, my wife of just over one year was diagnosed with a mild form of MS.
While there is precious little that I can do to actively engage the actual disease attacking my wife's CNS (read the primer on MS at WebMD), I do know that organizations like the National MS Society rely on fundraising and donations in order to help those with MS by providing information and assistance, as well as funding research. Since MS had become personal, it became time to rekindle my relationship with the local chapter of the NMSS.
The key folks involved with Bike MS were familiar to me. I had worked with Cindy during her time at the American Diabetes Association (on which, I have not quit; this is just a more immediate concern), and I had known Tony through my previous involvement with Bike MS many years ago. Both them and the rest of the staff in San Antonio have been instrumental in putting all the pieces in place. To help them and their mission, though, we need your help.
By clicking on the link below, you will be able to make a tax-deductible donation to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in my fight against MS. Over the coming months, I will serve as a moving advertisement for San Antonio Bike MS, participating in several triathlons (including Ironman Texas this past May 21), cycling, and running events, culminating in the Bike MS: Ride to the River on October 15 & 16. Nicholle and I, along with the whole of the National MS Society, thank you for your support.
